Reliable Solutions for Private Well Water Problems in Colorado
Private wells provide independence and cost savings—but they also place full responsibility for water safety and quality on the homeowner. Unlike city water, well water is not treated before it enters your home, and its quality can change over time due to weather, geology, nearby activity, and the age of the well.
At Aerus of Denver, we specialize in identifying and correcting well‑specific water problems so your family can enjoy clean, safe, and great‑tasting water every day.
Common Problems With Well Water
Well water issues often show up as noticeable symptoms. If any of these sound familiar, your well water may need attention:
- Rotten egg or sulfur smell – Caused by hydrogen sulfide gas or sulfur bacteria
- Red, brown, or black stains – Iron or manganese in the water
- Cloudy or gritty water – Sediment, sand, or silt entering from the well
- Metallic or bitter taste – Dissolved metals or low pH
- Slimy buildup in toilets or pipes – Iron or sulfur bacteria
- Health concerns – Possible bacteria, nitrates, or naturally occurring contaminants
Because each well is unique, two homes on the same road can have completely different water problems.
Why Well Water Testing Is Essential
Municipal water systems are regulated and treated. Private wells are not. That makes periodic testing critical.
Well water quality can change:
- After heavy rain or snowmelt
- From seasonal groundwater shifts
- Due to nearby drilling or construction
- As the well and plumbing age
Testing allows us to:
- Identify the true source of the problem
- Avoid unnecessary or ineffective equipment
- Recommend a system designed for your specific water conditions
Well Water Treatment Solutions
Once problems are identified, the right treatment system can dramatically improve your water. Common well‑water solutions include:
- Sediment filtration – Removes sand, dirt, and debris
- Iron and sulfur treatment – Eliminates odors, stains, and discoloration
- Whole‑home filtration – Improves taste, clarity, and overall water quality
- Microbiological protection – Designed to address bacteria‑related concerns
Every system we recommend is customized—because there’s no one‑size‑fits‑all solution for well water.

How often should I test my private well water?
Most experts recommend testing well water at least once a year, and anytime you notice changes in taste, smell, or appearance. Additional testing is advised after heavy rains, flooding, or nearby construction that could affect groundwater.
Is well water safe to drink without treatment?
Some well waters are naturally clean, but many wells contain contaminants such as iron, sulfur, bacteria, or nitrates. Because private wells are not regulated, testing is the only way to know if treatment is necessary.
Do I need a different system for well water than city water?
Yes. Well water systems are typically customized to address specific issues like sediment, iron, sulfur odors, or bacteria. City-water systems are usually designed for chlorine and taste issues, which is why a well-specific approach matters.
Can well water problems get worse over time?
Yes. Mineral levels, bacterial activity, and sediment intrusion can increase as a well ages or as groundwater conditions change. Addressing issues early helps prevent damage to plumbing, appliances, and water-using fixtures.
